What is the James River Writers Conference?

The James River Writers Conference is an annual gathering in Richmond, Virginia, that attracts prize-winning authors and highly regarded editors and literary agents from around the country to share their wisdom about writing and publishing. Since 2003, this multi-day event of 350 to 400 writers, has been known for its inspiring, collegial atmosphere and Southern hospitality.

When is the conference?

The 2019 conference is Saturday, October 12, and Sunday, October 13, 2019, with pre-conference Master Classes on Friday, October 11, 2019.

How long is the conference?

Two days, Saturday, 8:45 AM to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, 8:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Exact times are subject to change.

How much is a ticket and what does it include?

Early Bird Two-Day Ticket (through July 31, 2019)

$250 Members; $305 Non-members

Regular Two-Day Ticket (August 1 through October 13, 2019)

$300 Members; $355 Non-members

Full-time Student ticket (High school, college, or graduate school)

$125 (must document full-time student status)

One Day and Master Class Tickets

  • One-Day Saturday or Sunday ticket: $175 Members; $195 Non-members
  • Master Class: $45 Members; $65 Non-members

  • Saturday and Sunday continental breakfast
  • Saturday and Sunday buffet lunch
  • Keynote session on Saturday
  • First Pages session on Sunday
  • The Agent Dating Game on Sunday
  • The opportunity to book one meeting with an agent or editor and one one-on-one consultation with a published author
  • Over twenty breakout sessions to choose from over the two days
  • A variety of workshop intensives to choose from to learn one or two specific skills on both Saturday and Sunday
  • The opportunity to have a character consultation with a real therapist

  • Meet-and-greet for first-time attendees

Your One-Day Saturday Ticket includes:

  • Twelve breakout sessions to choose from over the two days

How many Master Classes can I take?

You can take up to three two-hour Master Classes on Friday, October 11; however, you must buy a Master Class ticket for each class you take.

What should I wear?

Attendees generally wear business casual or casual attire. During the day, you will be moving throughout the convention center so wear comfortable and appropriate clothing and shoes. You may want to dress in layers in case you find any of the rooms too hot or too cold.

How do I register?

Complete a Conference Registration form and pay the corresponding fees.

Cancellations

Cancellations and requests for refunds must be submitted in writing by mail or email by midnight on September 30, 2019, to [email protected]. A cancellation fee of 15% of your total will apply. No refunds will be issued after October 1, 2019. Refunds will be credited to your credit card account (or mailed if fee was paid by check) within 30 days after the conference.

Reasonable accommodations will be made for attendees with special needs. If you have special needs, please indicate on your registration form or send your written request to [email protected] by September 15, 2019.
