Have you been looking for a critique partner or a group to share writing feedback? Then join us next week, either virtually or in person. On Wednesday, 8/8, we invite anyone looking for a critique group to come out to Writers Wednesday at Ardent Craft Ales 5:30 – 7:30 to chat in person.
On Thursday, 8/9, starting at 7:00 a.m. we’ll have a post on on our Facebook page where you can leave a comment if you’re looking for a critique group or partner.

On Friday before the annual conference, we offer six Master Classes. Each two-hour Master Class, taught by one of our conference guest speakers, takes an in-depth look at a particular topic of interest to writers and published authors.
Registration is open to conference attendees through October 1. After October 1, if space is still available, registration will be open to those not attending the conference.
Since 2003, the James River Writers Conference has attracted prize-winning authors and highly regarded editors and agents from around the country to share their wisdom about writing and publishing.

James River Writers kicks off our conference with Pre-Conference Master Classes. Absorb the wisdom of the experts and gain hands-on experience, whether you want to discover that perfect angle to get published or explore nuances of your craft.
Do you have a poem or story or essay you’d like to submit for publication? In this master class we’ll discuss approaches to submitting your work for publication—where to find contests and journals open to submissions and how to find ones that are a good fit for your work. We’ll cover everything from how to make sure a contest is credible to how to format your piece for submission. Join Dana Isokawa, associate editor of Poets & Writers Magazine, for an in-depth look at journal and contest submissions.

Dana Isokawa is the associate editor of Poets & Writers Magazine, where she edits the magazine’s sections on writing contests and fellowships, literary news and trends, and conferences and residencies. She writes the magazine’s column on literary journals, Literary MagNet, and also helps curate the publication’s annual feature on debut poets. She has served as the interviews editor for Washington Square Review, and has taught creative writing in New York University hospitals. She received her MFA in poetry from New York University.
