March 2014 Writing Show Recap: The Hybrid Author

photoYou’re ready for the world to read your book. Should you self-publish and seek out your own audience? Or go the traditional route and entrust your work to a traditional publisher? There’s a third option: Do both. At the March 27, 2014 Writing Show, husband-and-wife team Philippa Ballantine and Tee Morris (pictured left with moderator Bill Blume) showed us how.

“Many streams make a river,” counseled Ballantine, author of steampunk and fantasy fiction. While Ballantine has a long list of traditionally published fiction, she has also self-published work such as her novel Weather Child, which her agent said wouldn’t sell in the United States because it takes place in Ballantine’s native New Zealand.  More

March 2014 Writing Show: The Hybrid Author: Combining Traditional and Self-publishing

The publishing industry seems to have become split lately, with authors dividing into those that clamor self-publishing is the way of the future, and those that say quality can only be produced by traditional methods. But what if there was a middle way?

Husband-and-wife duo Philippa Ballantine and Tee Morris, popular speakers at the 2013 James River Writers conference, are returning to Richmond for the Writing Show to examine the emerging “hybrid author,” adept at combining the flexibility of indie with the exposure of traditional publishing. Bill Blume, author of Tales of a 10th Grade Vampire Hunter, will moderate the discussion about how writers can find this middle ground and leverage the benefits of both. The second half of the panel welcomes questions from the audience.

Special Podcast: Plot Mechanics with Pip Ballantineand Tee Morris

Philippa Ballantine and Tee MorrisIn a few weeks, the husband-and-wife writing team of Tee Morris and Philippa Ballantine will invade Richmond and share their writing wisdom. Of course, unless you go to our Writing Show on Thursday night and their Master Class on Friday, you’ll miss it.

Pip and Tee, co-writers of The Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series, are no strangers to Richmond or James River Writers. They also spoke at our annual conference in 2013, and anyone who attended their panels knows they’re well worth the price of admission later this month.

Bill Blume, author of Tales of a 10th Grade Vampire Hunter, moderated the dynamic steampunk duo on a panel about plot mechanics, and they had a blast. Bill will get a second crack at hosting a discussion with Pip and Tee at our Writing Show on Thursday, March 27th. They’ll be talking about the “Hybrid Author,” and how writers can combine traditional and indie publishing to improve their literary presence and income.

Tee has been writing adventures in far-off lands and far-off worlds since elementary school. Inspired by numerous Choose Your Own Adventure titles and Terry Brooks’ Shannara series, he wrote not-so-short short stories of his own, unaware that working on a typewriter when sick-from-school and, later, on a computer (which was a lot quieter…that meant more time to write at night…) would pave a way for his writings.

Tee co-authors The Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series with his wife, Pip Ballantine. When Tee is not creating something on his Macintosh, he enjoys a good run, a good swim, martial arts (which he will start up again, someday), and putting together new playlists to write by. His other hobbies include cigars and scotch, which he regards the same way as anime and graphic novels: “I don’t know everything about them, but I know what I like.” (And he likes Avo and Arturo Fuente for his smoke, Highland Park for his scotch!) He enjoys life in Virginia alongside Pip, his daughter, and five cats.
