Canceled: Interview with Debut Author Carol Wall

We’re sorry to announce that due to an unexpected change in plans for the speaker, our joint event with the Junior League, “Green Thumb, Open Heart: An Interview with Carol Wall,” scheduled for Wednesday, April 30, at 11 a.m., is canceled. Please join the Junior League at their 69th Annual Book and Author Dinner the same day to get your literary fix instead! 

James River Writers and the Junior League of Richmond partner once again to present an exclusive interview with a debut author, in town for the Junior League’s 69th Book and Author Dinner. Carol Wall is the author of Mister Owita’s Guide to Gardening, a memoir about the unique bond she formed with Giles Owita and the lessons she learned about life and health. Bill Blume, author of Gideon’s Hunt, will guide the discussion about how Carol overcame her assumptions, her dread of flowers, and breast cancer to bring this powerful story of healing to the world.

Special Podcast: Plot Mechanics with Pip Ballantineand Tee Morris

Philippa Ballantine and Tee MorrisIn a few weeks, the husband-and-wife writing team of Tee Morris and Philippa Ballantine will invade Richmond and share their writing wisdom. Of course, unless you go to our Writing Show on Thursday night and their Master Class on Friday, you’ll miss it.

Pip and Tee, co-writers of The Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series, are no strangers to Richmond or James River Writers. They also spoke at our annual conference in 2013, and anyone who attended their panels knows they’re well worth the price of admission later this month.

Bill Blume, author of Tales of a 10th Grade Vampire Hunter, moderated the dynamic steampunk duo on a panel about plot mechanics, and they had a blast. Bill will get a second crack at hosting a discussion with Pip and Tee at our Writing Show on Thursday, March 27th. They’ll be talking about the “Hybrid Author,” and how writers can combine traditional and indie publishing to improve their literary presence and income.

Announcing the Inaugural Best Self-published Novel Contest

bookJames River Writers recognizes the writing talents and entrepreneurial skills of indie authors by creating The Best Self-Published Novel Contest, new in 2014. The contest will be conducted in alternating years with the Best Unpublished Novel Contest.

Contest Details

One first-prize winner will receive $500 and a ticket to the annual James River Writers Conference. The winner will be announced in October 2014 at the James River Writers Conference. Press releases will also recognize the winner.

Two finalists each receive $200.

Rules

To submit an entry, the author must be a JRW member or a student at a Virginia college or university. Join JRW.

Submissions for the 2014 contest will be accepted from May 1 through July 18, 2014 (postmark deadline of Friday, July 18). *Deadline has been extended from June 30.More
