JRW Advocacy Series

Addressing Issues Affecting Writers and the World We Live In

In 2021, Newbery Medalist Meg Medina approached James River Writers about sponsoring an important conversation addressing book banning and censorship. Not only was this issue coming to a head in our local communities here in the greater Richmond area, but also nationwide. We welcomed the opportunity to play a role in magnifying the important voices of authors who had been directly affected by this national issue. After a positive response and a great turnout, we decided to host at least one advocacy panel discussion a year. JRW has created a model where we reach out to people and organizations doing vital advocacy work and ask them to share resources and knowledge so our attendees leave with steps they can take to make a difference in their literary communities.

Ticket sales from our Advocacy Discussion Series are donated to the advocacy organizations we partner with, or an organization recommended by our speakers, to help them continue their important work.
