PANELISTS

Rachel Douglas

Before becoming Executive Director of The Innerwork Center in 2015, Rachel Douglas served as Director of Nonprofit Learning Point and founding leadership for the Partnership for Nonprofit Excellence, a joint program between VCU and the Community Foundation of Greater Richmond. In this role, she worked to build the capacity of Richmond’s nonprofit sector for almost a decade. She has also volunteered for many formal and informal grassroots organizations and believes the issues, while vast, are all connected. Rachel earned a BIS (now known as Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies) and MSW from VCU and considers herself a lifelong learner, holding multiple personal and professional development certificates. Her most recent certificate is as a mindfulness teacher through Duke University. None of her formal education compares to what she has learned by doing her inner work through The Innerwork Center.

Derek Kannemeyer

Derek Kannemeyer lives in Richmond, Virginia; was born in Cape Town, South Africa; and grew up in London, England. His writing has appeared in numerous publications from Fiction International to Rolling Stone. His books since 2018 include a poetry chapbook contest winner; the five act Play of Gilgamesh; the poetry collection Mutt Spirituals; and the hybrid photography/non-fiction tome Unsay Their Names, whose photographs became the fall 2021 main exhibit at Richmond\’s Black History Museum. His current focus is on a novel, The Memory Addicts.

Noah Scalin

MODERATOR

Noah Scalin is an artist, author, activist, and space pirate. He’s the creator of the Webby Award-winning Skull-A-Day and the collaborative science fiction universe League of Space Pirates. Noah’s fine art has been exhibited internationally, including installations in Times Square, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the Mütter Museum. He is the author of six books, a sought-after keynote speaker, and the founder of Another Limited Rebellion, an art & innovation consulting firm.

Melissa Scott Sinclair

Melissa Scott Sinclair is a fiction writer and award-winning journalist. Her recent work has appeared in Richmond magazineParhelion and the anthology Life In 10 Minutes. Her short story “Everything Must Go,” a ghost story set in the decaying corporate headquarters of Circuit City, was published in the anthology Richmond Macabre.
