SUMMARY:Chasing History: A Summer Speaker Event with Karen A. Chase
DESCRIPTION:JRW is pleased to offer a special\, free summer event with JRW member and debut novelist\, Karen A. Chase. Her celebrated new book\, Carrying Independence\, has taken the Richmond literary scene by storm. Weeks before her packed book launch event\, she had already sold out the limited-edition pre-order campaign\, had an article in Richmond magazine\, and been interviewed on radio and podcast programs. \nThis is your chance to hear for yourself how Karen carefully researched her historical novel to bring the story of the Declaration of Independence to life. Some of the questions Karen can answer for us include\, “Why was there just one copy of the Declaration with the signatures?” “Which Continental Congress delegates did not attend the formal signing?” and “How were those signatures acquired?” \nWhat could be more appropriate as we head toward the Fourth of July than hearing about a critical time in our nation’s birth at Historic St. John’s Church\, where liberty found its voice! \n\n\n\nDate: Tuesday\, June 25 \nTime: 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. \nLocation: Historic St. John’s Church Parish Hall\, 2401 East Broad Street\, Richmond\, VA 23223 \nPrice: Free\, but please R.S.V.P

That said\, whether in a long piece of fiction or a short personal essay\, there are specific tools writers use to structure their story into a narrative. Likewise\, the reader needs to follow you\, and they\, too\, come to your story with their own ideas\, stories\, and past experiences\, which they tell and re-tell in their own way however many times in however many voices in whatever order they want. So\, we have a big task at hand: Tell your story to the reader in a way that is both organically your own and can connect with a stranger. \nTAKEAWAYS\nWe will focus on various types of narrative structure through examples across all types of forms and genres. Specifically\, we’ll look at three different models to see how they work\, what is gained and what is lost\, and how you can benefit by looking at your story through different narrative structures. \n\n\n\nINSTRUCTOR\nPatrick Dacey is the author of the novel\, The Outer Cape\, an Amazon Editor’s Pick\, and the collection of stories\, We’ve Already Gone This Far\, selected by the American Bookseller’s Association as a Top Ten Debut. SUMMARY:August Master Class: The Naked Truth
DESCRIPTION:Writing a Memoir that Moves Readers\nwith Marita Golden \nWriting memoir is a way to find meaning in our lives\, make art of our experiences with pain\, trauma\, coming of age\, and struggles with identity–all the “stuff” of life. But how does one dig deep\, chip away at the walls of self-censorship and the rules against speaking the “unspeakable”? How does one discover the voice that is demanding release and write with beauty and–the primary requirement of memoir–courage? In this workshop\, we will explore writing techniques that will allow participants to write with transformative power. Our time together will consist of in-class writing\, discussion of work in progress\, and examination of published memoirists. \nSPEAKER\n \nCo-founder and President Emeritus of the Zora Neale Hurston/ Richard Wright Foundation\,  Marita Golden is a veteran teacher of writing and an acclaimed award-winning author of over a dozen works of fiction and nonfiction. As a teacher of writing she has served as a member of  the faculties of the MFA Graduate Creative Writing Programs at George Mason University and Virginia Commonwealth University and in  the MA Creative Writing Program at John Hopkins University. She has taught writing workshops nationally and internationally to a variety of constituencies. \nHer new novel is The Wide Circumference of Love.  Her other books include the novels After and The Edge of Heaven and the memoirs Migrations of the Heart\, Saving Our Sons and Don’t Play in the Sun One Woman’s Journey Through the Color Complex. She is the recipient of many awards including the Writers for Writers Award presented by Barnes & Noble and Poets and Writers and the Fiction Award for her novel After awarded by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association. \nDate: Thursday\, August 31\, 2017 \nTime: 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. \nLocation: St. John’s Church Parish Hall\, 2401 E Broad St\, Richmond\, VA 23223 \nPrice: $60 for members; $75 for non-members \n[themify_button style=”large red” link=”https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/u7s_sY4lyCBV1dlONB96Jw”]Register Today[/themify_button] \nAnd make sure you don’t miss Marita Golden on Wednesday\, August 30\, at The Writing Show.
