SUMMARY:Literary Salon: Authentically Scientific
DESCRIPTION:Writing about scientific topics presents authors with particular struggles—from finding reputable sources to properly conveying complicated information without losing one’s audience. How can a writer make sure they are interpreting their sources correctly while also expressing scientific information within its proper context? During the next Literary Salon\, Dr. Kelly Lambert\, a behavioral neuroscientist\, will lead a group discussion focused on strategies to avoid many common pitfalls and integrate science into your writing in a way that will entertain audiences and won’t make scientists groan. \nWHEN: Thursday\, March 8\, 7 pm – 9 pm \nWHERE: Patrick Henry Pub & Grille in the upstairs salon; 2300 East Broad Street in Historic Church Hill \nCOST: Free and open to the public (no ticket required) \nSPEAKER\nDr. Kelly Lambert\, PhD\, is a professor of behavioral neuroscience at the University of Richmond. Her publication record includes over sixty articles in journals such as Nature\, Stress\, and Neuroscience. She served as President of the International Behavioral Neuroscience Society from 2009-2011.  Dr. Lambert has received funding from the NIH and NSF to support her research investigating the neurobiology of emotional resilience and parental responses and\, recently\, has incorporated naturalistic observations of various primates at the DuMond Conservancy in Miami\, FL and wild raccoons into her lab’s neural explorations. Her work has appeared in mainstream media publications such as The New York Post\, The New York Times\, The Chronicle of Higher Education\, and the Richmond-Times Dispatch. Dr. Lambert’s two books for wider audiences include Lifting Depression: A Neuroscientist’s Hands-On Approach to Activating Your Brain’s Healing Power  and The Lab Rat Chronicles: A Neuroscientist Reveals Life Lessons from the Planet’s Most Successful Mammals.  She is currently writing Bursting Brain Bubbles:  Sharpening our Contingency Forecasts to Avoid Emotional Crashes (Yale University Press\, anticipated release Spring\, 2018). \n

SUMMARY:August Literary Salon: Pushing the Boundaries
DESCRIPTION:Many new writers are given the advice “to write what you know.” Yet\, if you limit your writing to what you know\, your stories\, poems\, or articles can become stilted and\, just as importantly\, you can become bored before you ever create the masterpiece you dream about. To fully engage your imagination and your audience\, you must take risks with your writing. Whether you’re writing about people or creating characters who are different from you or trying forms and structures that break conventions\, pushing the boundaries takes a deep understanding of yourself\, your experience\, and what you’re trying to achieve. In this literary salon\, we’ll explore what you need to know before you start bending the rules and then do some writing exercises to give you the opportunity to push your own boundaries. \nDate: Thursday\, August 17\, 2017 \nTime: 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm \nLocation: Patrick Henry Pub\, 2300 E Broad St\, Richmond\, VA 23223 \nPrice: Free \nSPEAKER\nAnnette Marquis \nAnnette Marquis serves as Program Director for James River Writers. She has an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from the Solstice Low-Residency MFA Program and is the author of over twenty-five books about computers and software\, one memoir about civil disobedience\, and numerous articles and essays on everything from how to talk to your IT person at work to dealing with the aftermath of a church shooting. As an intercultural competency consultant and trainer\, Annette specializes in teaching how to write authentically about race\, class\, sexual orientation\, gender identity\, ability\, and all the other identities that make us who we are. Annette lives in Henrico with her poet-librarian wife.

SUMMARY:Literary Salon: Mining documents for inspiration
DESCRIPTION:Poet Naomi Shihab Nye has said “poems hide. [. . .] What we have to do is live in a way that lets us find them.” Poems or stories may be hiding near you right now—in newspapers and magazines\, or in historic documents a few clicks away. Whether you collage fragments from many documents to make a found poem\, discover a poem floating up from a single source text\, or use documents as a spark for a story\, come prepared for creative play. After seeing how poems can emerge from documents\, in this case\, poems that tell the story of Richmond’s elusive Progressive-era philanthropist and educator\, Grace Evelyn Arents (who bequeathed land to the city that’s now Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden)\, we’ll mine new work from creativity-inspiring documents related to River City history and then share what we’ve found or invented. \nDate: Thursday\, April 20\, 2017 \nTime: 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm \nLocation: Patrick Henry Pub\, 2300 E Broad St\, Richmond\, VA 23223 \nPrice: Free \nSPEAKER \nWendy DeGroat  \n \nWendy DeGroat’s poetry has appeared in U.S. and U.K. publications\, including Rust+Moth\, Raleigh Review\, and Mslexia. Her chapbook Beautiful Machinery (Headmistress Press\, 2016) is available at Chop Suey Books and online. She is currently working on a poetry collection in the voices of Richmond philanthropist\, Grace Evelyn Arents\, and her life companion\, Mary Garland Smith. She and her wife live in Richmond\, where she works as a librarian\, teaches workshops\, mentors poets\, and curates poetryriver.org.
