Program Director: Full Job Description

The Program Director reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its programming objectives.

Strategy & Administration

  • Maintain official programming records (including Standard Operating Procedures) and documents as needed. Track participation and create and compile surveys.
  • Create and maintain digital forms for online registration.
  • Guide JRW in offering effective, mission-specific programming and in evaluating proposed programming.
  • Promote and oversee active and broad participation by volunteers and interns in order to run effective programming.
  • Assist with office administration as necessary, including mailings, member and program attendee inquiries, and database management.

Programs

  • Attend JRW programming regularly.
  • Assist program chairs and/or other staff with execution of successful programming, including the logistics of location, publicity (see Communications below), registration, set-up, staffing (see Management below), creation and printing of program guides or other materials, food & beverage, audio visual, and any required office supplies.
  • Assist and advise program chairs in selecting speakers and teachers to ensure diverse, inclusive programming that reflects our constituents.
  • Programs include the annual conference, the Writing Show, Writers Wednesday, Writers Farmhouse, and Master Classes. Additional programming may be added if it fits the strategic plan and meets the approval of the Executive Committee and Executive Director.

Communications

  • Keep the board fully informed regarding programming.
  • Work with other members of the staff and volunteers to publicize the organization’s programs to the board, members, donors, and the community through print and broadcast media, social media, and official organization e-newsletters.
  • Update website with event information.

Management

  • Manage the recruitment, involvement, and direction of volunteers and interns.
  • Ensure that job descriptions are maintained for key volunteer roles within programming.
  • Maintain a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse group of top-quality volunteers and interns.

Budget and Finance

  • Work with the Executive Director and committee chairs to ensure that programming stays within budgeted expenses and meets budgeted revenues.
