SUMMARY:FEBRUARY 2024 ONLINE NUTS & BOLTS LUNCHTIME SERIES: Building a Content Calendar- Give 'Em Something to Talk About
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays 11:30 am – 12:30 pm | February 6\, 13\, & 20\nAs writers\, we are often told that we need to begin to build an audience well before we have a finished product to promote. But\, how do you do this\, and what can you possibly talk about that will be of interest? In this 3-part series\, JRW’s Director of Programs & Communications\, Brynn Markham\, will help you build a content calendar (sometimes called an editorial calendar or a publishing schedule) in order to have a consistent presence online with the goal of growing and maintaining an audience that will have genuine interest in your work when it’s ready to go out into the world. Brynn will cover what\, exactly\, a content calendar is; which online platforms (social media\, blogs\, etc.) may be the best fit for your work; where and how to mine for relevant content; what tools you can use to stay organized and on task; and more. You’ll leave this series with actionable items to get started and fully form your own content calendar. \nWhen you register for this series\, you will have the option of filling out a questionnaire about your own work\, and Brynn will choose one registrant’s information to begin to form a content calendar that will be shared live during the final class. \nEach class in this series includes: a one-hour online workshop\, access to the recording\, the powerpoint used during the class\, and additional resources.  \nChoose one\, two\, or all three (BEST BUY!) classes in the series.  \nDetails and Registration HERE.

SUMMARY:2024 AUGUST ONLINE WRITING SHOW | Writers (Not!) Behaving Badly
DESCRIPTION:With social media making it easy to instantly share everyone’s very worst behavior\, how do you avoid missteps for yourself and your writing career? A conference organizer\, a literary agent\, and an indie bookseller “spill the tea” on good intentions gone wrong and horrible intentions gone nuclear\, and share best practices for playing well with others. \nSpeakers: Katharine Herndon\, Sam Hiyate\, and Andi Richardson \nModerator: Phil Hilliker \nDate: Tuesday\, August 20\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm Eastern Time \nLocation: ONLINE\, via Zoom \nCost: $12 Members | $17 Non-members \nRegistration is required. \nThe Writing Show includes a social time from 6:00 pm – 6:30 pm. This portion of the evening is optional. If you choose to only attend the panel discussion\, please sign in to Zoom by 6:25 pm to keep from interrupting the panel discussion once it begins at 6:30pm. \nThis program is supported in part by the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. \n  \n  \n \n \nSPEAKERS\n\n\nJames River Writers’ Executive Director since 2013\, Katharine Herndon has attended every one of JRW’s annual writing conferences\, over half in a leadership role\, and significantly more than a hundred Writing Shows. In addition\, she’s been an anonymous audience member at a variety of other writing conferences and festivals\, quietly noting which speakers she’d love to get on the JRW stage and which she’d . . . rather not. She’s been yelled at\, ghosted\, insulted\, and received so very many passive aggressive emails. On the flip side\, she’s met buckets of absolutely delightful writers she’d invite back in a second\, and she has tips on how to be one and not the other.\n\n  \n\n \n\n\n\nSam Hiyate worked at the literary magazines Blood & Aphorisms and The Quarterly in the 90s. He ran the edgy micropublisher\, Gutter Press\, from 1993 to 2002\, as publisher. He launched the literary division of The Lavin Agency in 2003\, where he built a list of clients and did his first deals. Sam’s projects for the agency have been in various categories\, including memoir\, literary and commercial fiction\, narrative non-fiction and graphic novels. He’s looking for works of all categories with distinct and compelling voices. He loved to discover and help new writers prepare their works for the market\, and to help them build a career with their talent. He is the host of the podcast Agent Provocateur.\n\n\n\nWEBSITE  |  FACEBOOK  |  TWITTER  |  INSTAGRAM \n  \n\n \n\n\n\nAndrea (Andi) Richardson left the corporate world for her dream job as an indie bookseller in 2018. She is the general manager and events coordinator for Fountain Bookstore and also works for the Southeastern Booksellers Association as Sales Coordinator. She is the most frequent author interviewer for Fountain events and often speaks at national and regional bookseller conferences on many topics.\n\n\n\nWEBSITE \n  \n\nMODERATOR\n \n  \nPhillip Hilliker is a creatively restless writer and illustrator with credits spanning many fields and genres. Formerly JRW’s membership coordinator\, he is currently a script writer for a video production and marketing firm in central Virginia. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:AUGUST 2024 ONLINE NUTS & BOLTS LUNCHTIME SERIES: Worldbuilding
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays 11:30 am – 12:30 pm | August 8\, 15\, & 22\nWhether you’re creating a fantasy world from scratch\, bending history\, or hoping to capture your current reality authentically\, worldbuilding is an important tool in your writing arsenal. In this three-part series\, we’ll share ideas and processes about where to start\, how to build a structure to support your world\, and how to weave in compelling characters who believably populate your reality. While parts of the August 15 session will focus on building science fiction and fantasy worlds\, this series will offer tips appropriate for all fiction genres and will not exclusively focus on SFF. \nJRW’s Executive Director\, Katharine Herndon\, returns as your instructor for this three-part series. Katharine’s personal worldbuilding has added zombies to the Wild West\, a feathered serpent to the Virginia Museum\, and hellhounds to a suburban backyard. While her computer’s search history probably wouldn’t worry the FBI\, she’s always looking for those realistic worldbuilding details (“Do purple martins return to the same house each year?” “What’s the name of that bookstore in Minneapolis with the pet chicken?”). She’s been an instructor for several decades now and has taught business English at Lockheed Martin\, a teacher workshop at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts\, a class on “Writing Your Author Bio\,” and multiple JRW Nuts & Bolts sessions on craft and business. Her short stories have appeared in RVA indie press Sink/Swim’s The Great Richmond Zombie Book and the Richmond-based anthology River City Secrets. More recently\, and realistically\, she has a chapter in Launch Pad: Countdown to Marketing Your Book\, and a craft piece online in the Wellspring Literary Journal on beating imposter syndrome.\n\nEach class in this series includes: a one-hour online workshop\, access to the recording\, the powerpoint used during the class\, and additional resources.  \nChoose one\, two\, or all three (BEST BUY!) classes in the series.  \nSeries details and registration HERE.\nThis series is supported [in part] by the Virginia Commission for the Arts\, which receives support from the Virginia General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts\, a federal agency. \n  \n
