SUMMARY:NaNoWriMo Write-In with JRW!
DESCRIPTION:Do you need some time and motivation during the day to get some writing done? Join us for our NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) write-in! \nJRW is excited to partner with Gather to share this gorgeous co-working space with our NaNoWriMo friends. Not doing NaNoWriMo? You can still stop by for any amount of time between 10:30-5:00 to get your writing done\, whatever its purpose! \nIt’s a secure building\, so to get inside\, participants just need to hit the buzzer to the left of the door\, tell the person who answers that you’re with JRW\, and a JRW staff person will be down to let you in. Our gathering will be on the second floor (elevator accessible). Two hour street parking is free on neighboring side streets\, or the GRCC convention center has a parking deck across the street where parking is $7 for the whole day. Coffee and tea are provided\, and attendees can bring in their own (non-alcoholic) beverages or snacks as well. \nDate: Wednesday\, November 13\, 2019 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. – 5:00 pm \nLocation: Thalhimer Room of Gather Arts District\, 313 East Broad Street\, Richmond\, VA\, 23219. \n(See above for instructions on accessing the building.) \nPrice: Free \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n The usual advice about writing dialogue sets a pretty high bar: advance the plot\, capture your characters\’ voices and reveal something about them\, don\’t dump in exposition\, and watch out for -ly words. But how do you do all that between two quotation marks? This class will explore the ins and outs of effective dialogue. We\’ll talk about all of the above\, plus tag lines and some of the mechanics\, like punctuation and capitalization. Author and James River Writers\’ Executive Director Katharine Herndon will walk you through how to get your characters talking without using a bare light bulb or a dungeon cell. We\’ll dissect scenes from the pros and try a few hands-on exercises to limber up your pen. You\’ll leave with a renewed appreciation of what dialogue can do for your story and concrete takeaways for improving it. \n\n\n\n \n Date: Sunday\, April 28\, 2019 Time: 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM Location: Visual Arts Center of Richmond\, 1812 W Main St\, Richmond\, VA 23220 Price: $65 – Members; $80 Non-members \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n REGISTER\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n INSTRUCTOR \n\n	\n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n Katharine Herndon \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n Katharine Herndon is the Executive Director of James River Writers and an enthusiastic advocate for the RVA literary community. SUMMARY:Master Class: The Naked Truth: Memoir Writing with Marita Golden
DESCRIPTION:The usual advice about writing dialogue sets a pretty high bar: advance the plot\, capture your characters\’ voices and reveal something about them\, don\’t dump in exposition\, and watch out for -ly words. Then\, we’ll outline the process for submitting it for agent representation or publication — including a few things you may have forgotten. \nDate: Wednesday\, August 28\, 2019   \nTime: 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm (Doors open at 6:00; meet & greet 6:00-6:45; program starts at 6:45) \nLocation: Firehouse Theatre 1609 West Broad Street\, Richmond\, VA\, 23220 \nPrice: $12 – Members; $15 Non-members ($5 for students) \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n The usual advice about writing dialogue sets a pretty high bar: advance the plot\, capture your characters\’ voices and reveal something about them\, don\’t dump in exposition\, and watch out for -ly words. SUMMARY:Chasing History: A Summer Speaker Event with Karen A. Chase
DESCRIPTION:JRW is pleased to offer a special\, free summer event with JRW member and debut novelist\, Karen A. Chase. Her celebrated new book\, Carrying Independence\, has taken the Richmond literary scene by storm. Weeks before her packed book launch event\, she had already sold out the limited-edition pre-order campaign\, had an article in Richmond magazine\, and been interviewed on radio and podcast programs. \nThis is your chance to hear for yourself how Karen carefully researched her historical novel to bring the story of the Declaration of Independence to life. Some of the questions Karen can answer for us include\, “Why was there just one copy of the Declaration with the signatures?” “Which Continental Congress delegates did not attend the formal signing?” and “How were those signatures acquired?” \nWhat could be more appropriate as we head toward the Fourth of July than hearing about a critical time in our nation’s birth at Historic St. John’s Church\, where liberty found its voice! \n\n\n\nDate: Tuesday\, June 25 \nTime: 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. \nLocation: Historic St. John’s Church Parish Hall\, 2401 East Broad Street\, Richmond\, VA 23223 \nPrice: Free\, but please R.S.V.P \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n The usual advice about writing dialogue sets a pretty high bar: advance the plot\, capture your characters\’ voices and reveal something about them\, don\’t dump in exposition\, and watch out for -ly words. She used to teach (English\, of course)\, but the homework got to her\, so she took up nonprofit work instead. Previously\, she worked for AAA\, Walt Disney World\, a community college in Florida\, and a ranch in Wyoming–pretty much the required random collection of jobs for an author bio. She has a B.A. from Davidson College (in English\, of course) and an MA from the University of Florida (in\, yes\, English/Creative Writing). Her short stories have appeared in several indie-published anthologies\, including The Great Richmond Zombie Book and River City Secrets. Website: kaherndon.com   Twitter: @kaherndon

Writers Wednesday brings together writers of every experience level and genre in a casual atmosphere to connect\, laugh\, and revel in a well-deserved break. While hosting this program online\, we create rotating\, intimate groups of 3-5 people in breakout rooms\, to allow attendees to have manageable conversations with others. And\, JRW staff is always on hand to answer any questions you may have about James River Writers\, or writing in general. This is a great entry point for those that are new to the James River Writers community. Plan to join us!  Sign up for our enews to make sure you get the link to sign up for this monthly event. Registration is required. \n  \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n The usual advice about writing dialogue sets a pretty high bar: advance the plot\, capture your characters\’ voices and reveal something about them\, don\’t dump in exposition\, and watch out for -ly words. SUMMARY:Emyl Jenkins Award nominations are open through July 31\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:To honor the memory of Emyl Jenkins\, who passed away in 2010\, James River Writers presents an award to an outstanding individual who\, as Emyl did\, inspires a love of writing and writing education in Virginia. \nAn advocate for writers and their readers\, Emyl had a knack for connecting both people and organizations. She shared her time and expertise with everyone she encountered. She encouraged writers at all levels\, especially fledglings trying to get those first words down on the page. Her generous spirit and enthusiasm rubbed off on everyone she touched\, and\, like ripples in a pond\, her actions widened the circle of writing encouragement. \nA winner of the 2019 award will be someone who best matches Emyl Jenkins’ efforts to make Virginia a better place for writers\, whether by connecting people and/or organizations around the written word\, sharing time and expertise about writing\, or simply encouraging writers to do what they do. \nNominations accepted May 1 through July 31\, 2019 \nAny Virginia individual is eligible\, except for members of the JRW board of directors\, the advisory board\, or staff. \n  \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n The usual advice about writing dialogue sets a pretty high bar: advance the plot\, capture your characters\’ voices and reveal something about them\, don\’t dump in exposition\, and watch out for -ly words.
