SUMMARY:Master Class: Crafting and Workshopping the Synopsis
DESCRIPTION: A synopsis shouldn’t feel scary\, but it’s also important to take your time and get it right. While some editors and literary agents won’t care about getting one . . . there are plenty who do\, and the last thing you want is to try to bang out a quick synopsis when you feel the pressure and the clock ticking. In this workshop\, we’ll spend some time digging into what makes a great synopsis by discussing real examples and advice dished out by the pros.\n\n  \nLiterary agent and author Eric Smith will talk about how to work on all of this. He’s been on both sides of synopsis writing\, from his life as an author to his career as a literary agent. Then he’ll workshop with writers who are struggling with the first few pages of their synopsis. Stress on the first few pages\, as a good synopsis should only have to be two to three pages long. The best ones are just a page!\n\n  \nWriters interested in having their synopsis critiqued need to have it sent to Eric Smith no later than March 11th. (Information on how to do this will be provided once you sign up.) After his talk and a brief break\, he’ll sit with individual writers for a few minutes and share his notes. All participants (who send their work in on time!) will be sent their synopsis via email\, with notes in-line in Microsoft Word. If you’re still working on your synopsis or need to know how to start\, you’re welcome to attend the class and send a synopsis to Eric at a later date for critique\, but it will take longer for him to respond.\n\n  \nAfter the workshop\, we’ll have a Q&A\, and attendees can ask anything\, from questions about the publishing process to writing YA to whatever.\n\nDate: Thursday\, March 21\, 2019 \nTime: 9:00 a.m. – Noon \nLocation: Visual Arts Center of Richmond\, 1812 W Main St\, Richmond\, VA 23220 \nPrice: $65 – Members; $80 Non-members \n  \nREGISTER NOW\n\n  \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n In this two-hour master class\, we’ll discuss the life of the short story—how to take your drafts to the next level; the process of submitting to literary journals; what lit magazine editors are looking for; and how to use your published story to help propel your writing career. SUMMARY:Master Class: Structuring A Novel with Patrick Dacey
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to all who registered. This Master Class is SOLD OUT. Sorry to anyone who missed the opportunity to attend. We are planning one more Master Class for 2018\, so be sure to check back soon. \nCOST: $65 for members; $80 for non-members \nDATE: Saturday\, August 25\, 2018 \nTIME: 9:00 – 12:00 p.m. \nLOCATION: St. John’s Church Parish Hall in Church Hill. 2401 E Broad St\, Richmond\, VA 23223 \nDESCRIPTION:\nFocus: Structure for Stories both Big and Small \nSo\, if you’re like me\, you have twenty different ideas about a hundred different stories that have been told a million times. That said\, whether in a long piece of fiction or a short personal essay\, there are specific tools writers use to structure their story into a narrative. Likewise\, the reader needs to follow you\, and they\, too\, come to your story with their own ideas\, stories\, and past experiences\, which they tell and re-tell in their own way however many times in however many voices in whatever order they want. So\, we have a big task at hand: Tell your story to the reader in a way that is both organically your own and can connect with a stranger. \nTAKEAWAYS\nWe will focus on various types of narrative structure through examples across all types of forms and genres. Specifically\, we’ll look at three different models to see how they work\, what is gained and what is lost\, and how you can benefit by looking at your story through different narrative structures. \n\n\n\nINSTRUCTOR\nPatrick Dacey is the author of the novel\, The Outer Cape\, an Amazon Editor’s Pick\, and the collection of stories\, We’ve Already Gone This Far\, selected by the American Bookseller’s Association as a Top Ten Debut. He holds an MFA from Syracuse University and has taught writing at various schools\, including the College of William and Mary. His stories have been featured in The Paris Review\, Zoetrope All-Story\, and Guernica\, among other publications. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n In this two-hour master class\, we’ll discuss the life of the short story—how to take your drafts to the next level; the process of submitting to literary journals; what lit magazine editors are looking for; and how to use your published story to help propel your writing career.
